Lefkada or Lefkas is an island in the Ionian Sea and with the islands of Corfu, Cephalonia, Ithaca, Zante and Paxos are the regions of the Ionian Islands. It is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea (320 sq. km.) And fourth in population with about 22,000 inhabitants at the 2001 census. Under the plan Kapodistrias Lefkada along with the islands of Kalamos, castes and Meganisi (also known as Princes), was the prefecture of Lefkada based in the city of Lefkada. Since 2011, however, when it was introduced in the program Kallikratis, Lefkada, along with the aforementioned islands, is now based in the municipality again the city of Lefkada.
Due to its geographical location (its coasts are very close to those of the mainland which separates the historian Strait Drepanou) is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge length of approximately 20 meters. Along with Evia is the only two islands in Greece which is accessible by road.
1963 was the Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis bought the Scorpio, a small island located across from the east coast of Lefkada and the cosmopolitan Nidri, acquired since then worldwide fame, occasionally hosting many visitors and celebrities from across the globe. Indeed, residents of the area to honor the Greek shipping magnate, built in honor of a statue, which graces the square.

Administrative division - Population
The beach Engremni south of Lefkada
The island along with Meganisi, castes and Kalamos is the prefecture of Lefkada, the smallest county in the country. Belongs to the Ionian islands. The county has, in the 2005 census, 27,938 inhabitants, while the island of Lefkada has 26,183 inhabitants. Its capital is the city of Lefkada, with 6,852 inhabitants. One of the most famous villages are Ligia (739 kg), Nidri (1,748 kg), Karya (1.104) Lazarata (454) and Nikiana (666 kg).
By 2011, the county included the following municipalities:
• Municipality of Apollonia based Basilica (3,235)
• Municipality Ellomenou based Nidri (3,352)
• Municipality based Karya Karya (1,427)
• Municipality of Lefkada based in Lefkas (16307)
• Municipality Meganisiou based Katomeri (1,092)

Since 2011 the administrative reform (Kallikratis), the prefecture of Lefkada renamed Regional Sector of Lefkada belongs to the Ionian Islands Region based in Corfu. The old municipalities Apollo Ellomenou, Karya, Lefkada Sfakiotes, and communities Kalamos and Kastos formed the new municipality Lefkada and renamed municipal units. The municipality Meganisiou remains unchanged.
The main types of economy on the island is tourism, which in recent years has a soaring, making the Island one of the busiest summer resort in the Mediterranean, while the frequent involvement of residents in agriculture, viticulture, the oil industry and fishing from the old times until today has played a very important role in the development of the site.
Culture - Sport
The island, like the other Ionian islands, has a rich culture with varied traditions and customs, which hide a hundred years of history. The Karsanika embroidery, custom Christmas New Year and Epiphany and Easter customs are some of the most important cultural characteristics of Lefkada people. The Philharmonic Society of Lefkada (Fell), which is the second oldest musical organization in Greece (founded in 1850), has contributed to the cultural heritage of participating in major historical events such as the Olympic Games in 1896. Also on the island every summer takes place the festival of dance and music (International Folklore Festival) from 1962 to today, with the participation of artists from around the world, and the Feasts of Reason and Art protodiorganothikan in 1955 is one from the oldest cultural institutions in Greece.
The island is an enviable destination for lovers of water sports. In various parts of the island there are beaches suited to such circumstances. For example, on the beach of St. John, with its huge sand, one can come into first contact with the new for Greece kitesurfing sport and to learn its secrets. Indeed, each year organizes official games with the participation of athletes from around the world. Vasiliki bay, beach Ponti is the haunt of windsurfers. Hundreds of athletes visit this place every year to show their potential in the sport of surfing, and while there organized Festival of Surfing. And the above two beaches are among the three most suitable for Europe and the top ten in the world for this kind of extreme sports. Other sporting activities that the island is diving, water skiing, paragliding, sailing, cycling and horse riding.
History - Mythology
Her name Lefkada got from cape white or otherwise Kavos Kera, located at the southernmost tip of the island. The cape in antiquity called white stone or White edges. A legend says that the poet Sappho from the island of Lesvos, jumped from the rock of the cape to be released from her love for Phaon. Close to that area is the temple of the god Apollo, to whom is dedicated the white rock. Earliest island called Agia Mavra taking the name from the homonymous church that was built in the castle of Santa Maura, which is across from the city of Lefkada, which formed the fortification art. For a long time the city of Lefkada was built around this castle, but later the Venetians moved it to its present location.
Studies have shown that the first signs of civilization on the island are from the Paleolithic era. Excavations carried out by the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld near Nidri discovered finds from the Bronze Age (2000 BC) and theorized that Lefkada was Homer's Ithaca.
Just outside of town and more specifically near Kalligoni ruins of the ancient city Nirikos, which was the first city of the island. All around from the city had built a great wall, part of which survives today.
Lefkada has taken part in several major battles in the past, such as the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Plataea during the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian war on the side of the Spartans. Followed faithfully and Alexander the Great to the huge campaign. It seems that those of his followers founded the eponymous town in coastal Syria, and another near Damascus.
During the Byzantine period, the island remained in obscurity. 1293 is given as dowry to John Orsini, from the ruler of Epirus victorious. The Orsini built the town's fortress to protect the island from the pirates. Shortly afterwards built into the castle and the church of Agia Mavra from whom he borrowed the name and the castle.
Ottoman - Venetian
In 1479 the Ottomans occupied the island domination that lasted for about 200 years. The island, because of its geographical position, is the only island in the Ionian Islands who knows the Turkish occupation. In 1684 into the hands of the Venetians, who moved the town from the castle, which was built in its current position. So, after 200 years of Ottoman occupation, the island fell into the hands of the Venetians and its destiny will be the same as the fate of the other Ionian islands. The Ionian islands were now political and social unity. 1797 France, led by Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Island, like the rest of the Ionians. The financial measures of French Democracy, however, is unbearable for local citizens and cause resentment. In 1798 Russo-Turkish onslaught make the Ionian and get under their rule, the Ionian Islands. In 1807, the island and all the Ionian islands passed into the hands of France, which has changed its regime, having created an imperial regime. In 1810, the British conquered the island until 1814 have captured all the Ionian islands. Stringent measures and authoritarian laws of the British, however, have the effect of public resistance resulting in significant revolutions and uprisings like that of Lefkadites in 1819 which was combated with violence and brutality.
Finally, in 1864, the island with the other Ionian islands, under the conditions of '63 and '64, assigned officially to Greece and the Ionian Islands after centuries of foreign occupation is now freely.

Just outside of town and just across from the floating bridge (the gap is about 40m.) Is the Venetian castle of Santa Maura. The castle is the fortification art. Within the town, the Archaeological Museum, which houses works of art, and finds from the Stone Age to the Roman period and Marina Lefkada, which is a much bigger and from the most organized in the Mediterranean. At the entrance of the city, next to the harbor is the famous park of poets (Locals usually call Bosketo), which houses the busts of important personalities of the island (Valaoritis Sikelianos, Lafcadio Hearn, Dimitrios Golemis, Kleareti Next - Malamou ), who made history with their artistic aura and his wonderful works.
