History - Mythology
Her name Lefkada got from cape white or otherwise Kavos Kera, located at the southernmost tip of the island. The cape in antiquity called white stone or White edges. A legend says that the poet Sappho from the island of Lesvos, jumped from the rock of the cape to be released from her love for Phaon. Close to that area is the temple of the god Apollo, to whom is dedicated the white rock. Earliest island called Agia Mavra taking the name from the homonymous church that was built in the castle of Santa Maura, which is across from the city of Lefkada, which formed the fortification art. For a long time the city of Lefkada was built around this castle, but later the Venetians moved it to its present location.
Studies have shown that the first signs of civilization on the island are from the Paleolithic era. Excavations carried out by the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld near Nidri discovered finds from the Bronze Age (2000 BC) and theorized that Lefkada was Homer's Ithaca.
Just outside of town and more specifically near Kalligoni ruins of the ancient city Nirikos, which was the first city of the island. All around from the city had built a great wall, part of which survives today.
Lefkada has taken part in several major battles in the past, such as the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Plataea during the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian war on the side of the Spartans. Followed faithfully and Alexander the Great to the huge campaign. It seems that those of his followers founded the eponymous town in coastal Syria, and another near Damascus.
During the Byzantine period, the island remained in obscurity. 1293 is given as dowry to John Orsini, from the ruler of Epirus victorious. The Orsini built the town's fortress to protect the island from the pirates. Shortly afterwards built into the castle and the church of Agia Mavra from whom he borrowed the name and the castle.
Ottoman - Venetian
In 1479 the Ottomans occupied the island domination that lasted for about 200 years. The island, because of its geographical position, is the only island in the Ionian Islands who knows the Turkish occupation. In 1684 into the hands of the Venetians, who moved the town from the castle, which was built in its current position. So, after 200 years of Ottoman occupation, the island fell into the hands of the Venetians and its destiny will be the same as the fate of the other Ionian islands. The Ionian islands were now political and social unity. The Venetians claimed recognize and allow the Ionian Islands in the local autonomy by creating local governments, but that does not mean the lack of influence of the Venetian, infrastructure and lifestyle of the residents of each island. Items that are still strong today.
1797 France, led by Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Island, like the rest of the Ionians. The financial measures of French Democracy, however, is unbearable for local citizens and cause resentment. In 1798 Russo-Turkish onslaught make the Ionian and get under their rule, the Ionian Islands. In 1807, the island and all the Ionian islands passed into the hands of France, which has changed its regime, having created an imperial regime. In 1810, the British conquered the island until 1814 have captured all the Ionian islands. Stringent measures and authoritarian laws of the British, however, have the effect of public resistance resulting in significant revolutions and uprisings like that of Lefkadites in 1819 which was combated with violence and brutality.
Finally, in 1864, the island with the other Ionian islands, under the conditions of '63 and '64, assigned officially to Greece and the Ionian Islands after centuries of foreign occupation is now freely.
